GOOD FOOD & WINE SHOW 2010–BRISBANE (1)

 GOOD FOOD & WINE SHOW-BRISBANE 2010© BUSOG! SARAP! 2010
I’ve finally attended a Food & Wine Show last Saturday!!!!!  For the past previous years, I’ve overlooked this event as I was more interested in the Craft and  Cookbook side of things.  Due to food blogging I’ve freed a day for this event this year to check it out=)  The TRIBE arrived 1 hour before the doors were opened.  Tons of people already lined up and most of them I think,  knows what to do once they are in, but because Mr. H and I were newbies in this game….we were hopelessly disorganize and missed free tickets for the Celebrity Theatre.  We just wondered aimlessly stall to stall and checked out what interested us.  It was tiring for Mr. H and it was a fun foodie day for the rest of the TRIBE.  I’ll be posting Part 2 to cover the dishes that the Celebrity Chefs had on offer from the Oxford Landing Restaurant.  I got so many pictures taken and can’t bear not to post them…

So here’s some of the Stalls we’ve visited:

TASSAL PREMIUM TASMANIAN SALMON© BUSOG! SARAP! 2010TASSAL ~ TASMANIAN SALMON

Earlier that morning, I’ve asked permission to take pictures of the 2 exhibitors cooking some salmon omelette inside the Tassal Stand.  The demonstration already started but the nice lady in front of the stall told me I’m more welcome to come inside.  There was about 5-6 people watching the demonstration and I’ve place myself against the back wall, trying to get a good angle but due to the people in front being too close to the cooking table I was not able to take a good shot, so I just ended up listening and watching the cooking demo.  What really irks me was I’ve notice this lady placing her husband to spread out to fill up her empty space so that  they can secure one of the 3 rectangle serving plates while she can go and check out the upright display fridge during the cooking demo, and who else does she want her space protected from….ME!…..all I want to say to that lady, please it’s only salmon omelette…if it was truffles or beluga caviar that’s another story as I haven’t tasted them yet;P  I left before they served the cooked omelette.

LUV-A-DUCK© BUSOG! SARAP! 2010LUV-A-DUCK

I’m a new Luv-A-Duck follower,  the Peking Roast Duck Breast is to die for…..juicy, tender, tasty and most important of all …yummy skin!  Their fried potato cubes cooked in Duck Fat was awesome!  Mr. H even ask if we can buy a small container of the potato cubes, it’s that good.  Another big big bonus was the ladies in there were super friendly and easy to talk to.  Cusinera is not a duck eater but their products and attitudes converted me to be a duck lover.

NANDOS© BUSOG! SARAP! 2010NANDOS

Here’s another stall that has some great people, we went to Nandos stall before lunch and tried some of their sauces with this super yummy deep fried seasoned bread crisps.  We’ve asked them if they sell packets of the uncooked seasoned bread crisps?  One of the girls smiled (super friendly) and explained to us that it was just flat bread that Nandos use and maybe some chicken salt sprinkled to it.  It goes so well with Nando’s Sweet & Sticky Sauce, that I will definitely try to replicate that seasoned flat bread pieces at home and visit the Nandos shop near our house to buy that bottled sauce.

GROVE AVOCADO OIL© BUSOG! SARAP! 2010GROVE AVOCADO OIL

I discovered Grove Avocado Oil by accident, we happen to stop in front of their stall for a breather, and out of impulse I decided to try them out but I can’t seem to get to their sample table as this group of people who are only “aware of their presence and no one else” blocks the table…..they were not sampling (maybe they’re finished) or buying, just standing there.  To avoid them, I have to go to the side to reach out for some cubes of bread to dip into the pots of different avocado oil flavour.  Thank gawd, I did this….if I didn’t, I would have missed a great product.  I bought the Garlic and Lime, as I find them the best out of the 4 flavours on offer.  Mr. H used the Garlic Avocado Oil in our scrambled eggs yesterday morning, and oh my, it was excellent!  I’m leaning more now to Flavoured Avocado Oil for salad dressing than Olive Oil=)

MAYFIELD CHOCOLATES© BUSOG! SARAP! 2010MAYFIELD CHOCOLATES

THE BRITTLE CO© BUSOG! SARAP! 2010THE BRITTLE CO

URBAN THIRST© BUSOG! SARAP! 2010URBAN THIRST

The TRIBE got hammered with Urban Thirst stickers as we pass this stall, wish it was sample packets to take home=)  We can’t really go near the stall as Mr. Adventurous little fingers would be all over the display.

SAKE JAPAN© BUSOG! SARAP! 2010SAKE JAPAN

COCOA FARM CHOCOLATE© BUSOG! SARAP! 2010COCOA FARM CHOCOLATE

BEN & JERRY'S© BUSOG! SARAP! 2010BEN & JERRY’S VAN

This is one super cool van, would love to drive one.

BEN & JERRY'S SAMPLES© BUSOG! SARAP! 2010BEN & JERRY’S ICE CREAM SAMPLERS

Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream are really good, I’ll put them in “moreish” category…

MATCHBOX © BUSOG! SARAP! 2010KITCHENAID & CUISINART APPLIANCES

Seen somebody posed next to the KitchenAid Mixer display for a photo as we passed this display twice, I was like that before…hehehehehe, but I got mine finally, that I can call my own….it was fourth time lucky!  I was thrilled that it arrived on the day of my birthday last month.

MAGAZINES BOOTH© BUSOG! SARAP! 2010MAGAZINE BOOTH

Sometimes kindness come in unexpected places=)  As we waited for the doors of food and wine heaven to open, one of the ladies in front of us….offered one of their spare ticket for free magazines, of course I took it…anything free is like icing on the cake, I say!

CUSINERA'S FEW ESSENTIALS© BUSOG! SARAP! 2010CUSINERA’S SMALL LOOT….

The TRIBE tasted the “Chop Chop Chicken” and was surprise that it tasted similar to our homemade Shredded Chicken Mayonnaise Spread.  I’ve seen them in the shopping aisles but ignore them as I thought canned chicken would be horrible but knock me dead….they are not bad after all!  Of course I got to have my Luv-a-Duck esky and my new favourite flavoured Grove Avocado Oils…..I wish there were more of ingredients stalls than ready made food, sauces and dips, I could have bought more products.  Half of the show was not in TRIBE’s interest as it was more on the alcoholic side and I think me and Mr. H has passed that tipsy drinking stage during our single years, LOL!  Don’t get me wrong, I have a fair knowledge about the alcoholic side of things…swirling wines and spitting inside the bucket and so forth but I’m over it now….but if you tell me that a particular wine is good for cooking, then I’m all ears!

VERDICT:

Would the TRIBE be going next year?

-  Maybe….only me and Miss M as Mr. H finds it tiring walking around trying to dodge people and he doesn’t like squeezing or fighting for sample tidbits (I don’t either, etiquette and manners are etched on my forehead).  With regards to Mr. Adventurous, I have to wait and see if he mellows out next year.  He’s too much for me to handle alone, he’s like a cute Energizer bunny.

My special requests/wish for next year…

-  Give me more interesting ingredients that I’ve never encountered before or only heard about.  Put them in small containers for 1-2 uses and am willing to part with my money gladly just to sample them, it doesn’t have to be free.

-  To the rest of the public that goes to this event….please eat before you go, as alcohol does funny things when the stomach is empty.  Sampling doesn’t mean stuffing yourself up!  Be sensitive to others and clear yourself away from the sample tables once you got your samples and another thing, the person behind you (with manners~me) will not rob you of your sample salmon omelette..hehehehehe!

-  To the 99% of the Stall owners/exhibitors that I’ve taken photos of, thank you for not minding my picture taking…I bet you won’t remember me as  there were hundreds of people that went through your stalls for this 3 day event.  For that small sampling tidbits…I gave you free exposure and good reviews when it was rightfully due=), I’ve even bought products from you guys/ladies that really impressed me, so I hope next time I see you….a smile won’t go wrong and a slight nod would do me fine.  I’ve experienced my first embarrassing pic moment last Saturday when I tried to picture the Rice Cube Stall, unexpectedly the guy inside the stall hollered over the group that was watching his demo and told me that there’s no picture taking allowed…sentence ending with, it has to have his face on it or something….my head suddenly went blank, the group was looking at me.  You should have seen me erase his stall pic as fast as the speed of light from my camera!  How do you react in this “on the spot” situation"?  I was about 3-4 metres away from his stall when I took the  pic!  Now I know the feeling of “wishing the ground would open up and swallow me whole….”

  1. Wow! Loved your blog! We walked past the Grove Avocado Oil as well and tasted the Garlic one, it was absolutely sensational! But sadly all stocks were sold out on the Saturday afternoon and the exhibitor said they don't have any more stocks for the next two days! She said there are no more stocks in Australia, and the only way to buy them is going to New Zealand! Lucky you got a bottle! Enjoy :)

  2. @JanJan~ thanks for visiting my blog too...I've visited their FB page...they been in business for 10 years, geeh what rock was I under? for missing a great product. They stated in the FB page that they supply Woolies and Coles, will check out tonight if they got some...but that's impressive if they runned out of stock in Australia=)

  3. I like the Good Food and Wine Show. I went to the one in Sydney and it was so much fun. So much to do and so many bargains. Nice review. The duck fat is amazing on roast potatoes. Perfect everytime. I hope you enjoy all your goodies. Yum.

  4. I went to the show on friday and nobody was pushing or hogging space for samples. The exhibitors were quite generous with the sample too. There was this delicious raspberry sorbet from New Zealand produce stall sittng in the freezer and you can actually ask for a sample,in fact most exhibitors obliged even if you don't see sample on offer. However, I found some popular products like Forever knives' Sakura ceramic knife set sold out before noon! On a Friday show!
I just saw Avocado oil in both woolies and Coles.
The Rice Cube guy also said no to me snapping him, that was awkward moment for me too with other spectators staring at me. If the man really shun publicity why is he there at the show??

  5. @Rabbit Sim~ Wish I went GF&WS on the friday you went=) It was a bit hectic for us as we brought our kids along...it went a bit crazy around Saturday lunchtime, so much people! I saw some of the Avocado Oil in woolies and coles too but just the original one=( I am planning to give the flavoured ones out for xmas to my relatives.....About the R.C Guy, maybe he got enough publicity with his product I guess, but the feeling I can never forget...if only I could sneak under the carpet;P
